A wife may not be taken from the clan to which the would-be husband belongs, nor from the village in Mewun with which the “ parent " village of that clan is linked by a mhal temes. There are, too, some special marriage prohibitions in force between certain clans within the district of Seniang. Thus it is stated that'men of the clan whose “ parent " village -is Luha do not marry women from any of the three villages Uraau, Rahulemp, or Tivulemp. The reason for this will be discussed later; but we may mention here that the genealogies show that this rule is actually observed. Again, although Teleleu and Benaur belong to distinct clans with different gong rhythms, yet for purposes of marriage they are regarded as one and the same because of their close proximity to each other. In the south-west district this is the only instance recorded in-which geographical position becomes, for purposes of marriage, equivalent to clan kinship, but the same feature is found further north in the Lambumbu and Lagalag districts. Further, no woman may be selected who belongs to the clan of the man's mother, which regulation renders marriage with the mother's brother's daughter impossible; nor to the clans of the father's wile or wives, father's father's wife, father’s father's father's wife, and rnother’s mother. Theoretically indeed, a man should not marry a woman belonging to a clan into which a man of his own group has married within living memory.
