§ >5 5 ~ 1 1»-.-— ' i KINSHIP ORGANIZATION IN SOUTH-WEST 71 almost indeï¬Ånite extent. Probably some term is commonly extended to about 60 or 70 per cent of the people of these neighbouring districts, and could be extended to -the remainder should occasion arise. A clan would, normally, contain at least ï¬Åfteen to twenty adults, and it is clear that if the terms were extended to two or three clans, they could easily be applied to all. Hence every man would probably refer to or address by a relationship term not fewer than 350 persons, and almost certainly rnore. In the following list of kinship terms, the native word is given together with its primary meaning in English, and following upon this are given the kindred to whom it is extended. It is a feature of Malekulan kinship, however, that different words are often used for address and reference, and unfortunately it is not always clear from the notes whether certain forms are used in address only, or whether they are also used for the ï¬Årst person singular possessive. The close possessive is employed for kiusfolk in almost all cases and is designated in Seniang for the ï¬Årst person singular by the suffix -ngk, and for the second singular by the suï¬Åix -m, but it is probably not safe to assume that those terms which lack the ending "-ngk are used in address only, nor that the vocative form of those ending in -n_gk can be arrived at by deleting this possessive sufï¬Åx, though in many cases this may be so. For the sake of simplicity and space, the following initials will be used throughout in place of the full English kinship terms :— F = father ; M = MOTHER ; S = son ; D_ = daughter ; B = brother ; Sis. = sister ; H = husband ; W = wiie ; Ch. = child; e = elder ; y = younger. ~ Not infrequently the terms used by a man and a woman for the same relative are different. When this is so, the letters (m.s.) or (w.s.) will follow the English translation according as the speaker or person whose kinsman is being referred to is male or female. Amo (2nd sing. hinam). Primary meaning : MOTHER. Extended to: M.eSis'., F.B.W., amo lamp [hinam lamp). M.ySis. amo tivari (hinam tivari).
