[Note: this transcription was produced by an automatic OCR engine]

104 MALEKULA
are ashamed to call their husbands by name, others are not.
Generally teknonymy is employed, the wife calling her husband
nutugh lemm (father of the child) and the husband referring to
his wife in a similar way. _
KINSHIP n~r LAGALAG
The district of Lagalag, lying to the north and east of
Lambumbu, is, like the other districts of Malekula, divided up
into a number of patrilineal, local groups. The kinship terms
and groupings show a. certain general resemblance to those of
Lambumbu, though as an analysis of the list given below will
show, there are some striking differences.

1 This list is compiled from two separate ones, which on the whole are very
similar. The only important discrepancy lies in the terms ior cross-cousins,
which in one are reported to be the same as those for siblings, in the other are
recorded as given above. The evidence given by the genealogies shows that
the second and not the ï¬Årst list is the more reliable in this matter.—C. H. W.
