Lembï¬Årens (2nd sing. lembdrensam; lembï¬Årmsen 3rd sing). ? Primary meaning: B.W. (w.s.). Extended to: yB.W. (m.s.) ; S.W. ; Sis.S.W. ; M.B.S.W. Neligh (2nd sing. P). Sis.H. (m.s.) ; D.H. Nevin lel sungk (2nd sing. P). H.Sis. Mm lag sungk (2nd sing. P). W.B. We have here some rather interesting anomalous groupings of relatives. With the elder brother (m.s.), mums is classed the wife's elder sister's husband, and with the elder sister (w.s.), tughangk, the husbands mother's brother’s wife, the husbands elder brother's wife, and the husband's elder brother, Similarly hauungk " younger brother â€ù (m.s.), includes the wife's younger sister. We have here an example of a practice, not unusual in Melanesia, of a kinship term which is primarily used between those of the sarne sex, being employed contra.-sexually between afnnals. Nazmmgk “younger sisterâ€ù (w.s.), is used for the husband’s younger brother’s wife, but not for the husband's younger brother, presumably because under the system of the junior levirate, the latter is a possible or probable spouse. The husband's sister's husband is grouped with the brother (w.s.) as mammgk, and the wife's brother's wife with the sister (m.s.) as 116v¢‘mungk. With the father is classed the father's sister’s son, the latter being distinguished by the suffix -uve, and the father’s sister's daughter is referred to as “ little father's sister â€ù. Other people grouped with the father's sister are the mother's brother's wife, and the husband's sister, although the latter is addressed as nevin lel sungk. The mother is associated with the father’s sister's son's wife, who is called " little mother â€ù, this being the logical outcome of grouping the father and father‘s sister's son together. The term for mother's brother, bimbi, is extended to include the father's sister's husband, and the £ather’s sister's daughter's husband, though the former is sometimes classed with the grandparents and the father's father's sister's Son.
