CHAPTER VI
MARRIAGE AND THE RELATIONS OF THE SEXES
SENIANG AND WILEMP
The Regulation of Marriage I
The selection of a consort in Seniang and Wilemp is controlled
by a number oi prohibitions rather than injunctions. A wife
may not be taken from the clan to which the would-be husband
belongs, nor from the village in Mewun with which the “ parent "
village of that clan is linked by a mhal temes. There are, too,
some special marriage prohibitions in force between certain clans
within the district of Seniang. Thus it is stated that'men of
the clan whose “ parent " village -is Luha do not marry women
from any of the three villages Uraau, Rahulemp, or Tivulemp.
The reason for this will be discussed later; but we may mention
here that the genealogies show that this rule is actually observed.
Again, although Teleleu and Benaur belong to distinct clans
with different gong rhythms, yet for purposes of marriage they
are regarded as one and the same because of their close proximity
to each other. In the south-west district this is the only instance
recorded in-which geographical position becomes, for purposes
of marriage, equivalent to clan kinship, but the same feature is
found further north in the Lambumbu and Lagalag districts.
Further, no woman may be selected who belongs to the clan
of the man's mother, which regulation renders marriage with
the mother's brother's daughter impossible; nor to the clans
of the father's wile or wives, father's father's wife, father’s
father's father's wife, and rnother’s mother. Theoretically indeed,
a man should not marry a woman belonging to a clan into which
a man of his own group has married within living memory. It
was said that cases were frequent in which, on hearing that
a marriage had been arranged between two people, an old man
would disapprove of it, on the grounds that he remembered a
marriage between a man of the bridegroom’s and a woman of
the bride's clans. _In such an event, however, the marriage
