Ruaru Metenmar Ruhvaru Mial Harten Namal or Metenmal Sesai Laghau Sisien Tesnrel Laghau Metenrnal Mbulrnbul Larhau Malmelrne Mal Tasi Morornbon Roglili Ronglili Sien Mal Laghai Tees Naambwit Ronglili Ronglili Rhus Nevat Testes Uren Miliin Saghsaghrnal Tees Taviin Mal Unfortunately there is nothing to show how far these lists are reliable, and on theuwhole it seems probable that they were collected before the one given above was recorded, and represent only the names which can be purchased at a Nimangki without any distinction between those of equal value and those of different status, Almost certainly Saghsaghmal and Taviin Mal are of the same standing, the highest which it is possible for a man to reach and by far the most expensive to buy. The objects which a man can purchase at a nelemew are classed together as nisit tlel (" sacred things â€ù). Among them are included four grades of penis wrapper, ot which unfortunately we have no description, and certain decorated girdles called mu or mum. There are perhaps nine varieties of these, each with a distinctive name : nau lewiar, mm mzmbmzgon nilambut, mm vimgon lï¬Åhit, mm nelemm iï¬Ångdn, mm nin nambangan im, mm nambamgon mm“, mm nambzmgzm mmbzm, mm nambongon mhongon iuah} It is probable that these are not arranged in the order in which they are bought, but it is said, speaking generally, that if a man is celebrating a Nimemgki to purchase the name Tovtop, he will at the same time buy mmbongon mmi ; if Meten- mal, nambongon namban ; and if Rhus Nevat, nambongrm nivongan ivah. These girdles differ from each other in their width, colour. and ornamentation, and in the way in which their ends are ï¬Ånished oft. The mm nambongon noui is a narrow band of which one end is out square and decorated with a white fringe, the other cut to an asymmetrical POINT and tasselled with yellow (Fig. Iga). The nau nambongon mlmbzm resembles two of the ï¬Årst variety ‘ It is possible that certain of these names belong not to the different varieties of girdles but some of them to varieties of penis wrappers, certainly the last three are wrappers (Fig. 19)‘ The meaning of all these words has not been recorded. mzmbangun = “ month " ; nambangau naui = " the mouth of the water bamboo " ; ntlzmen = “ the tongue " ; iï¬Ångï¬Ån = “ he (or it) has " ; mm nin nambzmgan 1°/14 = “the girdle of the two mouths ".-—C.
