Ivimzmgki are invariably absent from the Nalau/an ceremonies,
yet it seems almost certain that in essenoe, though not in outward
form, they are identical. Both are regarded as being temporarily
the abode of the ghosts of the immediate ancestors, or more
particularly of the grandfather, for the ghosts whose voices the
mus naainggol represent are those addressed in the Nalawmi
ritw as mum, and on at least one OCCASION, at entrance to the
Nimangki Neuelvel, the I/imamgki tame: are invoked by the
same title.‘
Each N alawan grade has a special name, a distinctive variety
of croton, an individual gong—rhythm, a special title for its
members, a special kind of hat or mask called tmws mbulmbal,
which is also named, and a distinctive structure which is set
up in the dancing ground for the ceremony. The order in which
the grades are entered is not quite constant, though there is
less variation than in the taking of the Nimangki grades. The
following list indicates the sequence which is most generally
