TOT EMISM 593 i man of Ndawu were to kill a locust a man of that village die, and if a man of Eviin Ambus were to cut a nambus he would perish. But for the people of Loorveli and Lucr- l6 nature of the sanction is less clear. In Loorlanggalat of this group should cut the ninggala! tree it is recognized as a deliberate sign that he intends to kill someone. The totem of Loorveli is a certain tree (loormbus), which is used for swearing oaths. No one in the district may cut or break it. If he do so deliberately and put the leaves or a spray of it in his belt it is an indication that he meditates killing A man and that he will the Temes M bal 1 to Loorveli for the people oi that place to have a least. Should a man accidentally cut the tree the people of Loorveli compel him to fulï¬Ål his obligation and kill someone. In Loorlanggalat the tabu seems to concern members of that group only, but i.n Loorveli, as in Iumloor, it appears to be extended to all people oi the district and the members of the two groups respectively punish any breach of it. -Though the ritual attitude towards these two toterns must therefore be observed by the whole community, the special duties of the two clans in punishing offences against them suggests that they are indeed clan totems and not totems of the district. The objection on the part of members to others injuring the totem may be paralleled in other parts of the world as among many Australian tribes. It would appear that one object may be the totem of more than one clan. Thus the bird nimbile is respected by the three independent villages of Luha, Tivulemp, and Tunggor, while the nikakal is the totem of Bendur, Leneven, and Teleleu. Further, in one of the ï¬Åeld-hooks an incomplete list of Seniang totcms is given. The ï¬Årst clan mentioned is by inference, Ainel Mbwlrmial,“ but the name of the totem is not recorded. The list then runs : " Gave birth to :~(2) Niwinumbon, (3 and 4) Nikakal, (5 and 6) Nivimasin, (7) Noumou, (8) Nindangmiang and Ne1n'nbum- beau." These are the totems of the clans of Uraau, Benaur, and Teleleu, Batnetarnp and Loormbarap, Nembiirii, Mbwilrnbar, and Nernep respectively. Finally a note at the end runs : “ All I Who or what the Tamas Mbal is is nowhere explained, but this may imply that the body ni the man killed will be distributed at a cannibal least.—C. H. W. 1 For the sake at convenience the Clans Will be referred to by the names of their g0ng—thythms. The clans themselves, ac will be remembered, have no diltinctive narnes.—C. H. W. Q‘?
