Vinbamp turned and spat towards the east, away from his
shadow. Then he bade the other rnan stand close behind him
and look forward over his shoulder. He did so, and saw far
down below, as in a pit or hole through the earth, a distant place
which he did not recognize, wherein were men moving about as
men do in this world. Presently Ates Vinbamp turned and spat
once more, in the direction away from his shadow. Forthwith
the vision faded. It was essential that Ates Vinbamp should
spit away from his shadow; had he done otherwise he would
have died.
