714 ' MALEKULA cylinders which are of coiled ware, and this decorated fragment, which may be of coiled or modelled ware, show clearly that in days gone by two distinct types of pottery were known and perhaps made in MALEKULA. We may, indeed, probably be sure that the jars and cylinders were of local manufacture, for they are so coarse and so ill-baked that they crack and crumble readily, and it is not likely therefore that they could have been imported from neighbouring islands. .
